Münchener Hypothekenbank has hired Thomas Völker as head of commercial real estate international clients in order to boost the German bank’s international presence.
As part of the new role, Völker will be responsible for the growth of the German lending business among non-German clients. He will also lead the bank’s lending business with non-German clients in the bank’s international target markets – UK, France, Spain and Benelux – as well as the expansion into other European real estate markets.
Völker left Helaba at the end of 2017 after 13 years at the bank as senior vice-president of international real estate finance in northern Europe. Prior to this, he worked for five years at Aareal Bank.
“I am very pleased that Thomas Völker has opted for Münchener Hypothekenbank. With his experience with international customers and markets, we intend to further expand the commercial financing business,” said Bernhard Heinlein, member of the board of management at MünchenerHyp.
Overseas expansion has driven higher lending at MünchenerHyp in the nine months to the end of September last year, when it wrote €1.4 billion of new commercial property lending, representing an increase of 55 percent year-on-year.
MünchenerHyp’s local market accounted for €1 billion of the bank’s new CRE lending through Q3, with the remainder allocated to the UK, France, Spain and the Netherlands.
Last November, the bank resumed lending in the US, a market it pulled back from in 2009, to further expand its international portfolio.
